Things We'll Do This Year

READ IN CLASS

We will have ample time to read every day in class.  We will read things that we select for ourselves.  We will analyze, discuss with friends, and write about what we read.

READ AT HOME

In addition to the reading that we do in class, we will spend at least 100 minutes every week, at home, reading things that we choose.

Tell Stories

Developing balanced literacy means we will also work on our speaking and listening skills.  Telling and listening to stories is a big part of our learning experience.

Write

Okay!  I said the horrible 5-letter word!  Yes, we will write in our classroom.  (And I think you might even begin to like it, after a while.)

Special Activities

We will go to Camp Kern this fall.  I can’t wait.  Maybe we should brush up on our ghost stories!

Every student will have a chance to share her/his writing with classmates.

Every student will complete a research project that will be directed by Mrs. Reiber and Mr. Kunkel.  The project will include hands-on practice of idea generation, library research, note taking, organization, drafting, revising, editing and publishing.

Educational Philosophy

Students are masters of their own destiny.

All children will learn, grow, develop and flourish in our classroom.

Our differences are the secret of fun, growth and learning.
We have as many different combinations of intelligence as we have students and teachers in the world.

Everyone has something to contribute to everyone else’s learning.

Teachers show you where you can go, encourage you, and help you get where you want to go.

Where you want to go can change for every new place you find yourself.

Classroom Management

It all starts with respect: for self, for others, for our family, our school and our community.

We make our classroom a safe space: no stealing or cheating, no abusive words or actions.  We all contribute to everyone else’s feeling of safety of body, feelings and ideas.

All people and cultures are welcome: our diversity is our strength to grow, learn, and bring a better future to our community.

Effort = Success!

The student and no one else is expected to be responsible for submitting assignments on time and of a quality that shows respect for everyone concerned.
